cool new story prompt for tomorrow →
Imagine. What would have happened if Goldilocks had stumbled upon the home of three goats, or three llama, or three squirrels, or three of any other species besides humans or bears? Think about it for a few minutes. How would this impact the story? What kinds of possessions would she find in the new three’s home? How might she interact with them and the three animals. Now, make a timeline of...

Kurt Vonnegut Writing Lessons- fuck I miss that...
“Here is a lesson in creative writing. First rule: Do not use semicolons. They are transvestite hermaphrodites representing absolutely nothing. All they do is show you’ve been to college. And I realize some of you may be having trouble deciding whether I am kidding or not. So from now on I will tell you when I’m kidding. For instance, join the National Guard or the Marines and...

reasonably time-occupying website, mainly filled with self-fellating blather though.
Now Write!
I found the book of writing exercises my slipstream teacher Peter Shippy assigned. Awesome dude, awesome book. I’ll try to post one or two of my favorite exercises from it a day.
The book is Now Write! edited by Sherry Ellis. Best I’ve ever come across. Shippy knows his shit.

Write a composition on the subject “My Pet”. The only requirement is that this...

this site is all kinds of fantastic fuzzy goodness. I’ve joined a billion writing communities, but I’m hooked on this one after only a couple days. the layout of the community is clean and simple, but well done. and the other authors are incredibly helpful and welcoming and make me feel all nice inside. join! it’s great.

Scrapiteria →
if I could shoot this into my veins I would. Scrapiteria is a collage collaboration blog and an excellent resource for inspiration. some collages are based on a theme, some are just random. but all are surreal and wonderful.
surreal line prompts
Here are a few randomly put-together sentences for inspiration. They can be used as first sentences, or just as elements in a story. They’re pretty strange, but originality’s dead. Go weird or die.
We find sticky diamonds near the water.
I smell big evil in the trees.
They were strange and tiny in the shadows.
It was time to stroke the humming leeches.
He was colorful against the shadows.

haiku writing prompts
At language is a virus (one of my top 3 writing prompt sites), there is a haiku generator which randomizes combinations of words. Here are some interesting ones I came up with, which might spark some kind of odd story idea:

McSweeney's shits gold →
If you go to McSweeney’s Internet Tendencey in general, you will find plenty of bizarre and hilarious articles and tidbits for inspiration. But my absolute favorite has to be the infamous list of prompts. They’re incredibly absurd and far-fetched, but they actually make you wanna write shit.

far too strung the fuck out to properly absorb this right now, but this seems like a fairly comprehensive list of ways to arouse a inspiration erection.

An awesome writing community- not only are you allowed to upload your work and get critiques on it, but the site provides you challenges for new projects. My only complaint is that there is a minimum word limit on all submissions- I embrace the microfiction.
